Understanding QR Code Structure

Every QR code consists of several key components: finder patterns (the three large squares in the corners), alignment patterns, timing patterns, and the data modules. Understanding these elements is crucial for creating codes that remain scannable even when customized.

The finder patterns are sacred - they help scanners quickly locate and orient the code. Never obscure or modify these elements. The data modules, however, offer more flexibility thanks to error correction, allowing for creative customization.

Color and Contrast Best Practices

The golden rule of QR code design is maintaining sufficient contrast. Dark modules on light backgrounds work best, but you're not limited to black and white. Deep blues, rich greens, and dark purples can all work beautifully against light backgrounds.

Avoid gradients that reduce contrast in certain areas, and be cautious with very light colors for the modules. Always test your codes on multiple devices before printing.

Size and Quiet Zone Requirements

The quiet zone - the blank margin around your QR code - is essential for reliable scanning. Maintain at least a 4-module quiet zone (the width of four small squares) around your code. For print materials, ensure your QR code is at least 2cm x 2cm for comfortable scanning.
